ABOUT OUR SEEDS

M-Organic seeds are produced using a method of “Terrestrial Sequestration” that produces plants with excellent yielding properties and cultivation properties in comparison to standard breeding procedures. This method has been proven to dramatically increase plant yields by 20% to 35% percent over conventionally produced seeds currently on the market.

WHAT IS TERESTRIAL SEQUESTRATION?

Simply put it’s an environmental enhancement method of engendering increased efficiency of CO2 fixation into sugars by the plant’s RuBisCO enzyme during the light-independent reactions of photosynthesis.

HOW DOES THIS PROCESS AFFECT THE RuBisCO ENZYME?

It improves photosynthetic efficiency by enhancing the RuBisCO enzymes in plants to increase catalytic activity and decrease the rate of oxygenation activity circumventing photorespiration. Photorespiration occurs due to the activity of RuBisCO in which the enzyme uses oxygen instead of carbon dioxide without incorporating carbon into sugars or generating ATP. Such, it is a wasteful reaction for the plant. By comparison carbon fixation via PEP carboxylase is more efficient.

WHAT IS PEP CARBOXYLASE?

PEP carboxylase is an enzyme with high affinity for carbon dioxide and is the first step in the biosynthesis of glucose. It fixes CO2 in the mesophyll cells of the leaf and the resulting four-carbon compound is shuttled into the bundle sheath cells where it releases CO2 for fixation by RuBisCO. Thus, the two processes are separated spatially, allowing for RuBisCO to operate in a low-oxygen environment to circumvent photorespiration.

OUR APPROCH TO CARBON FIXATION

M-Organics approach to carbon fixation by RuBisCO is in the compartment containing chloroplast stroma. Within the stroma are stacks of thylakoids, the sub-organelles which are the site of photosynthesis. Inside the thylakoids there is an empty area called the thylakoid space or lumen. Our technique increases photosynthesis assimilation activity that takes place on this thylakoid membrane. This involves the coupling of cross-membrane fluxes with biosynthesis via the dissipation of a proton electrochemical gradient.

CARBON GAIN, WATER LOSS

Carbon dioxide is a key reactant in photosynthesis. Most plants require the stomata to be open during daytime. The problem is that the air spaces in the leaf are saturated with water vapor, which exits the leaf through the stomata (this is known as transpiration). Therefore, plants cannot gain carbon dioxide without simultaneously losing water vapor.

HOW WE REDUCE PLANT TRANSPIRATION

Stoma is a pore found in the leaf and stem used for gas exchange. Air containing carbon dioxide enters the plant through these pore openings where it is used in photosynthesis and respiration. M-Organics enzyme enhancement methods affect the way a plant’s stoma complex regulates the exchange of gases and water vapor between the air and the leaf. This allows for a greater rate of carbon dioxide fixation to be achieved with less stomata opening, hence less water loss.
